In the spring of '71 things were going well....then someone got the big idea that the "four amigos" should invade "Europe". Must have been a "sunspot" or something!!! Start saving those "tips"! VG and Bart were hustling "siberia" and I plugged away inside the "red doors" or Rita's Room as I used to kid tourist. The story that Orson Wells and Rita Hayworth had owned the place had many and varied twist. "Yeah, Rita's bed was right over there by the fireplace". Of course in those days all that existed was the log cabin built by Sam Trotter.
Smith maintained the bar and we kept the touristas happy, after all it was the place to "Surcease From Sorrow".
Bart came up with the first scam. Even a Capricorn can't control two Aries and a Libra! He went to Santa Cruz and scored 500 hits of "blotter" acid for $250. About $83 bucks apiece. Supposed to be worth $10 a hit in Europe..., yeah we'll be rich.....Smith came up with the "peice d' resistance". Tony was making beautiful leather goods in "the barn" at Esselen. A pair of sandals with hollow souls, glued and tacked with 250 hits in each sandal. Smith also had him make a really beautiful leather carrying case, which could be cleverly twisted about and worn on the back.
The plan was to go in Oct., go to London, hit Amsterdam, maybe the Octoberfest in Munich, then head south where VG and Bart were going to hook up with the "Maharishi' in Majorca. Of course as Sept. approached Smith and I got antsy and decided to go ahead and meet the others in London or Amsterdam. We booked two seats on a flight we found in the "Chron", swore we were attending school, gave them $109 each and started packing.
The week we were leaving was the "Last Days of the Fillmore". Every night was broadcast on the radio. We hung out a lot at the "Trident" in Sausalito with all the other "hippies". I always felt like I was a "middle class hippie from Big Sur", mingling among the "upper class hippies of the city". Sex,Drugs and Rock & Roll....
